ACLU of Alabama, [email protected]

June 23, 2022

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – JaTaune Bosby, the executive director of the ACLU of Alabama, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization:

“This is a devastating ruling that will have life-threatening impacts. Although their attacks have intensified over the last decade, Alabama lawmakers have been committed to stripping away healthcare for women and all pregnant people long before Roe was decided. There is no doubt that this ruling will encourage them to insert themselves between doctors and their patients further.

Our active litigation will define what reproductive healthcare — including abortion — in our state will look like in the coming days, weeks, and months. The ACLU of Alabama remains committed to defending access to abortion as critical reproductive healthcare and using whatever tools we can to protect women and all pregnant people.

The path to taking back our rights is long, but the ACLU will be there every step of the way until we all have the power to make the best decisions for ourselves and our families. The battle for safe, legal, and evidence-based reproductive healthcare now shifts from the courts back to the statehouse.

It is incumbent upon the people of Alabama to let their lawmakers know that the ability for women and all pregnant people to choose when, where, and how to start a family is theirs alone.”
