MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The following is the comment from the ACLU of Alabama's Executive Director, Susan Watson, regarding Chief Justice Roy Moore's comments that the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment only applies to Christians. (Link below)
"Chief Justice Roy Moore is sorely misguided in his belief that the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution only applies to Christians. It applies to everyone, regardless of his or her religious belief or non-belief.
How is it appropriate for a State Supreme Court chief justice to unilaterally proclaim the interpretation of the federal Constitution?
Does this mean a non-Christian is treated differently when they present themselves in his courtroom?
I would not feel comfortable appearing before Justice Moore.
We are a diverse country and diverse state. We urge Governor Bentley to ensure that all Alabamian’s are treated equally before the law."
