Background: House Bill 89 highlights that pregnant people who have not been formally approved for Medicaid coverage but who submit proof of pregnancy and household income information to a qualified provider can receive up to 60 days of prenatal care while they wait for their Medicaid to be formally approved.
Our Position: We support House Bill 89. Alabama has the highest mortality rate in the nation, and Black women are at significantly higher risk of dying due to pregnancy or birth related complications than white women. Alabama also has one of the highest infant mortality rates. Many of these preventable deaths are attributed to the sparse amount of maternal care available in the state.
