The ACLU of Alabama comprises two separate corporate entities, the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama, and the ACLU Foundation of Alabama. Both entities have the same overall mission and share office space and employees. The ACLU has two separate corporate entities to do a broad range of work to protect civil liberties. The ACLU Foundation of Alabama is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that primarily engages in litigation and public education. The ACLU of Alabama is a 501(c)(4) non-profit corporation that primarily engages in lobbying and advocacy.
Job Summary
The Development Director is responsible for strategy and coordination in all facets of the organization’s resource development work, including membership, major gifts, planned giving, events, foundation relations, and donor services, and will manage the fund development program, oversee the Development Team and support the affiliate’s organizational growth. In addition, as a member of the directing team, the Development Director is an integral role that provides administrative and financial support to help increase the capacity of the affiliate.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Development Director ensures a high functioning development operation and attainment of fundraising goals, as well as excellent stewardship by coordinating, managing or supporting the following activities:
Donor/Donor Database Management and Administration
- Work annually with the National ACLU Development team to create a donor portfolio
- Identify and oversee or complete grant applications in a timely manner and create related reports
- Meet with donors in person, virtually or by phone
- Keep detailed notes in Salesforce regarding donors
- Make thank you calls or send thank you emails to selected donors immediately following receipt of a gift
- Produce quarterly board reports and periodic updates of progress towards goal
- Conduct analysis of individual donors, campaigns, and giving trends
- Track and collect pledged contributions
- Produce timely acknowledgement letters for contributions collected
- Develop internal planning and tracking systems for all activities
- Conduct annual reconciliation of finance and development records, with support from the CFO as needed, and produce an annual reconciliation report for National
Annual Donor Appeals
- Coordinate mailing schedule with ACLU National development operation
- Produce mailings to current donors for gifts of $500 and above
- Maintain Board giving records and quarterly emails
- Create and draft donor communications including cultivation letters, postcards, and annual report
Gift Solicitation Coordination
- Ensure that meaningful contacts (calls, emails, meetings) and other pertinent information are recorded in the donor database
- Produce periodic reports to key donors
- Manage portfolios of the Executive Director and Director of Philanthropy and Strategic Initiatives
Administrative Support & Other Duties
- Provide support regarding financial matters including Salesforce management
- Plan events and meetings
- Provide support on graphics, design, and various internal communication assets for staff and partners as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Experience and Qualifications
- At least 1 year of work experience in a nonprofit development office in a related position
- Solid working knowledge of CRM databases; knowledge of Salesforce preferred
- Strong writing and oral communications skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
- Ability to travel as well as work some evenings and weekends as necessary
- Self-starter who can manage multiple projects at once
- Demonstrated commitment to civil rights including racial and social justice
- Ability and motivation to foster an equitable and inclusive experience for staff and other partners
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with team members
Compensation and Benefits
Salary is commensurate with experience and within the parameters of the ACLU of Alabama: $85,000 - $105,000. Benefits include medical and disability insurance, 401(k) and vacation, pet insurance, holiday and sick leave.
