Background: Under current Alabama law, your ballot will be rejected if you forget to sign the return envelope, or do not have it notarized or signed by two witnesses. Many voters make errors with the requirements on a mail ballot, and because there is no recourse, their ballot is not counted. HB97 would require circuit clerks and absentee election managers to notify voters of ballot defects using a system of their choice. The voter then has the responsibility and opportunity to correct the defect.
Our Position: We support this bill. Fewer rejected ballots mean that the actual will of the population will be reflected in the vote total.
