The ACLU of Alabama supports the demand for municipal government to divest from police funding and reallocate funds to quality-of-life expenditures (such as parks, libraries, and sanitation) that ensure authentic public safety. Divestment must occur in conjunction with community investments including:
- Prioritizing Alabama’s communities’ public safety needs.
- Developing skills, tools, and resources to minimize community interactions with police.
- Creating and sharing public education materials that address the issue of public safety.
